Il distretto amministrativo di Manhattan all’omonima isola aggiunge altre piccole isolette. Tra queste anche due exclave circondate dalle acque territoriali del New Jersey. Le due isole in questione erano inizialmente conosciute come le Oyster Islands – chiamate così per lo strato di ostriche che le ricopriva e che era una risorsa di cibo per il popolo nativo dei Lenape. Alcuni secoli dopo le due isole hanno dato da mangiare all’idea di America che specialmente i migrati d’oltre oceano si nutrivano ed attualmente danno da mangiare alla storia e alla mitologia statunitense. I due isolotti attualmente si chiamano Liberty Island, così rinominata grazie alla Statua della Libertà che vi fu collocata nel 1886, ed Ellis Island che prese il nome da un suo successivo proprietario che lasciò come eredità all’isola il suo nome e la proprietà della medesima isola ad un erede che la rivendette a New York City. Come sempre accade in ambito umano, c’è i soldi li fa e c’è chi i soldi li spende. Attualmente entrambe le isole fanno parte del medesimo National Park gestito dal National Park Service.
Questi due isolotti semi-artificiali hanno avuto (e tutt’ora rivestono) un’estrema importanza sulla creazione degli USA sia sotto il profilo pratico, sia sotto il profilo culturale. In realtà pratico e culturale sono due attributi che dovremmo raramente scindere se non per perseguire pure e mere questioni di semplificazione. La cultura è pratica, e la pratica crea cultura. Iniziamo dalla celeberrima Liberty Island, famosa per essere l’ubicazione della Statua della Libertà. Forse il simbolo più tangibile degli interi Stati Uniti d’America. Iniziamo proprio con Liberty Island, proprio come un qualsiasi viaggiatore che entra nella baia di New York. D’altronde era stata messa in quella posizione proprio con l’intento di essere il primo percettibile visione del nuovo stato che si apprestava a diventare la locomotiva del sistema terrestre. L’isola che dava da mangiare ostriche ai nativi americani è diventata l’isola che più di ogni altro luogo ha dato da mangiare all’immaginario collettivo quando pensava agli Stati Uniti d’America. Facciamone due brevi accenni storici a partire dal 1667 quando quell’isolotto fonte di sostentamento dei nativi passò sotto la gestione di un colono olandese, Isaac Bedloe. Questo nome rimase attaccato all’isola come una ostrica ad uno scoglio (tanto per rimanere in tema). Nel 1746 poi Archibald Kennedy (in seguito l’undicesimo conte di Cassilis) acquistò l’isola e vi stabilì una residenza estiva insieme alla costruzione di un faro. Sette anni dopo abbiamo un annuncio pubblicitario che ci descrive l’isola come disponibile per il noleggio e dove viene anche nominata “Bedloe’s” insieme ad un altro nome alternativo, ovvero “Love Island”. L’isola fu poi rinominata nel 1956 attraverso un atto del Congresso degli Stati Uniti. L’inconfondibile e monumentale sagoma che caratterizza l’isola e che le ha dato il nome, fa da inscindibile premessa a Manhattan. È monumento simbolo universale degli Stati Uniti d’America, forse del medesimo ambito culturale in cui essi si formarono e da cui sono sorti: l’illuminismo. Sebbene ne sia molto successiva. Non poteva essere altrimenti viste le premesse di primo stato a foindarsi totalemente (almeno sulla carta) sugli ideali illuministi. D’altronde è un paradosso prettamente statunitense quello di fondarsi su ideali così esacerbamente illuministi (gli stessi che hanno portato alla Repubblica Francese dsorta a seguito della rivoluzione francese in cui il cristianesimo veniva messo da parte – eufemismo – e si cercavano di creare moderni culti alla dea sapiuenza, intesa come una normale divinità creata di sana pianta sul modello dell’egitto tolemaico con Serapide) e allo stesso tempo paese così fortemenet ancorato e sorto su una profonda religiosità e soprattutto sulla ricerca di libertà di culto di queste comunità cristiane ostracizzate nell’Europa del tempo.
Ad ogni modo è stata collocata là all’ingresso della baia di New York come ideale benvenuto ad ogni visitatore e come incipit e premessa di una “narrazione” che avrebbe dovuto seguire quel modello di libertà. Non a caso con i suoi 93 metri d’altezza (incluso il basamento) essa domina l’intera baia di New YTork e risulta distintamente visibile finanche circa 40 km di distanza per chi viene in anve dal mare. E la provenienza dal mare era la sola possibile all’epoca in cui la statua fu realizzata e colà collocata. Proprio per tale scopo fu scelto l’isolotto Bedloe’s in quanto collocato proprio di fronte a Manhattan di cui ne doveva costituire la prima immagine a chi si recava in nave negli USA. E la nave era a quel tempo l’unico mezzo possibile. È praticamente la porta d’oro attraverso cui si entra “in the land of opportunity”. La statua della libertà fu un omaggio del popolo francese agli Stati Uniti per il centenario della loro indipendenza. Fu prima costruita in Francia e poi assemblata nel 1886 su quello che ne diventerà l’omonima isola. La statua sorretta da una struttura d’acciaio, raggiunge i 46 m, che arrivano a 93 se si calcola il piedistallo. Lo scultore e promotore dell’opera, Frédéric Auguste Bertholdi si avvalse anche della preziosa collaborazione di Gustave Eiffel. Non poteva essere altrimenti vista l’intelaiatura d’acciaio. Si tratta del medesimo ingegnere Eiffel che di lì a poco donerà a Parigi uno dei suoi simboli univarsali, la torre che da lui prenderà nome. Al contrario della statua della libertà la torre Eiffel fuu accolta inizialmente a Parigi con ben più scetticismo e la sua fama fu molto controiversa. Ma di sicuro la sua fama non fu meno duratura dell’opera spedita dall’altra parte dell’oceano Atlantico. Ad ogni modo lo scultore Bertholdi nella realizzazione della sua opera più che alle opere degli ingegneri della seconda metà dell’ottocenta in piena espansione industriale, demandò la sua ispirazione alle sculture colossali dell’antico Egitto. Effettivamente l’iniziale e involontario riferimento alla religione si fa prolifico di collegamenti. A fianco ad esse, come lui stesse ebbe modo di dire, si ispirò anche allo sconfinato paesaggio statunitense che aveva generato anche nella mitologia nazionale un altro duraturo mito: il limite che si sposta sempre un pò più in là, il limite che non è limite, quelloc he noi chiamiamo farwest. Furono quindi anche gli sterminati paesaggi e i loro impressionanti dimensioni dei territori statunitensi ad avere avuto un ruolo importante nella concezione di un’opera dedicata a quel Paese

La Statua della Libertà si mostra da tutti i lati in tutta la sua maestosità, agli occhi dei turisti che raggiungono l’isolotto con il battello (partenza da Battery park). Oggi come ieri. La statua può ovviamente essere visitata e a tale scopo è stata divisa in tre livelli. Ognuno visitabile con un differente biglietto di ingresso. Gli Stati Uniti nascono come patria della libertà e la libertà ha sempre un costo come ci ricorda questo attaule simbolo della patria del capitalismo. D’altronde capitalismo, libertà e democrazia (mettiamoci anche questo concetto così caro agli USA e all’intero mondo occidentale) per certi aspetti hanno avuto una storia ed uno sviluppo storico-ideale strettamente/fortemente intrecciato. Nei pro e nei contro. Tra la monarchica e militaresca Sparta e la libera e democratuica Atene la guerra seguiova i commerci di Atene. Ma chi di noi oggi non guarda estasiato alla filosofia e all’arte dell’Atene del epriodo di Pericle e dintorni? Se ciò rende meno poetica la storia, non la rende però meno affascinante.
Dal 1984 fa parte del Patrimonio dell’Umanità Unesco e ogni anno è visitata da circa 11 milioni persone che per la maggior parte salgono i 354 gradini della scalinata interna per giungere fino alla corona. Qua si trova un punto di osservazione con vista superba sulla città e sul porto. Però non attrae solo turisti. Essendo fatta anche di rame e avendo una statura così notevole la Statua della Libertà è anche un’irresistibile fonte di attrazione per i fulmini. Si è calcolato che ogni anno venga colpita circa 600 volte!
Due veloci parole per descrivere questo monumento ricco di simbologia. , Rendiamo omaggio al suo ideatore e facciamo contenti coloro che personificano quella statua con l’ “american dream”. Il nome completo dell’opera di Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi è Liberty Enlighting the World (La libertà illumina/guida il mondo), ma tra gli americani è familiarmente conosciuta come Lady Liberty.
Per definire i lineamenti di Lady Liberty, Bartholdi sembra che si ispirò al volto di sua madre Charlotte. Come su ogni questione dove non si possa esser certi, molti studiosi si sono divertiti a speculare. Io lo facevo spesso con il geroglifico anatolico (ora lo faccio più saltuariamente). L’arte richiama più appassionati del geroglifico anatolica, e sta cosa mi è del tutto comprensibile. Il volto della statua della libertà è stata quindi anche accostata alla dea egizia Iside (a ben vedere l’Egitto ricorre piuttosto spesso), alla babilonese Semiramide e soprattutto alla romana Libertas. Considerando l’impronta neoclassica che tanto piaceva all’epoca soprattutto negli USA, quest’ultimo accostamento divino potrebbe essere il più plausibile. Anche se va detto che in quel periodo anche l’Egitto richiamava un gran fascino. Altri studiosi hanno rintracciato altri possibili modelli nella Libertà della Poesia di Pio Fedi, in Santa Croce a Firenze, in una scultura di Camillo Pacetti sulla balaustra del Duomo di Milano e nel dipinto La Libertà guida il Popolo di Eugène Delacroix. Chi più ne ha, più ne metta. Ma io per adesso mi fermerei qua.
Di sicuro Bertholdi realizzò un precedente “modellino” che è ancora visibile a Parigi sull’Isola dei Cigni, nei pressi dell’antico laboratorio dell’artista. Misura “appena” 11.50 metri e guarda in direzione dell’Atlantico, verso la sua sorella maggiore. Se ne fecero anche altre copie che furono esportate in vari altri Paesi. Se ci si può guadagnare …
Questa monumentale statua alta 46,48 metri (escluso il basamento) raffigura una donna che indossa una lunga toga. Con la mano destra libra fieramente verso il cielo una fiaccola che rappresenta il simbolo del fuoco eterno della libertà, mentre con l’altra mano tiene una tavola recante la data del giorno dell’Indipendenza americana, 4 luglio 1776. Quest’ultimo riferimento va di pari passo con le catene spezzate ai piedi, simbolo della liberazione dal potere del sovrano dispotico. Non poteva essere altrimenti visto che l’enorme Statua fu regalata dalla Francia agli USA per festeggiare il centesimo anniversario dell’indipendenza dalla monarchia inglese, acerrima nemica della Francia almeno fino alla metà del XIX secolo. Inoltre le punte della corona rappresentano i sette mari e i sette continenti (nella classificazione anglosassone), oltre a rappresentare i raggi del sole così cari ad un massone come Bartholdi. da questo punto di vista c’è chi considera la statua come la rappresentazione della dea Ragione, la cui torcia simboleggia il sapere massonico. Ovviamente nei simboli ognuno ci vede qualcosa. I simboli hanno una loro storia e ogni interpretazione ha una sua storia. Di conseguenza i simboli sono potenti, ma sono anche ambigui.
Il colore invece non è frutto di nessuna simbologia, il suo attuale caratteristico colore blu-verde non era quello originale. Ve la immaginate una Statua della Libertà color rosso lucido? Sforzatevi perché all’origine era proprio così. Essendo fatta da circa 30 tonnellate di rame, quello era il suo vero originario colore. Il blu-verde attuale è infatti dovuto all’ossidazione del rame per effetto dell’esposizione agli agenti atmosferici e dell’inquinamento.(vedere: https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2017-06/acs-tso062917.php )
Fino al 1916 ai visitatori era consentito inerpicarsi fino alla balconata che circonda la torcia. A causarne la chiusura fu l’azione di alcuni sabotatori tedeschi durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale. Non per nulla circa un anno dopo la stessa statiua della libertà fu presa a prestito per una cartolina il cui ruolo era quello di spronare la popolazione alla chiamata alle armi per una guerra lontana non solo nello spazio.
Date: ca. 1917-1918
I pesanti danni subiti dal braccio della Statua furono riparati, ma il percorso restò chiuso al pubblico per motivi di sicurezza. Ci si era scottati proprio con la torcia. Ma questo non fu il più grave degli attacchoi terroristici che ha subito New York nel corso del tempo. Gli effetti deleteri del terrorismo a New York hanno un lungo elenco di precedenti che non iniziano con il nuovo millennio.
Nel 1984, n prossimità del 100º anniversario, la statua venne chiusa al pubblico per esser restaurata. In quell’occasione si decise di sostituire la torcia originale, ormai vecchia e corrosa, con una nuova placcata in oro a 24 carati. In seguito la vecchia torcia venne anch’essa restaurata ed esposta all’entrata principale del basamento. La cerimonia di riapertura della statua fu ovviamente il 4 luglio 1986, giorno del centenario dall’inaugurazione.
Un’ultima curiosità. Ovviamente la Statua arrivò dalla Francia via mare in pezzi da assemblare sul luogo, ma mancava ovviamente del basamento. Troppo pesante e inutilmente costoso da spedire da un continente all’altro. In mancanza di fondi per costruire quest’ultimo (oltre un milione di dollari dell’epoca ma si trovano anche differenti cifre) il New York Times lanciò una sottoscrizione pubblica. Questa antesignana campagna di crowdfunding ebbe un notevole successo. In pochi giorni furono raccolti 102 mila dollari, l’80% dei quali giunse da contributi minori di un dollaro. La Statua fu montata su un enorme blocco di granito, su cui fu inciso un sonetto della poetessa Emma Lazarus dedicato agli immigrati che giungevano a New York. Questo ci rimanda all’altra isoletta che con liberty Island forma il “parco nazionale”, ovvero Ellis Island
Passiamo quindi ora all’isolotto di Ellis Island, non noto per la mastodopntica statua che la patria della rivoluzione illuminista per eccellenza ha donatyo agli usa, ma nota per i milioni di emigranti che soprattutto a partire dall’Europa sono entrati nell’immenso continente nord americano proprio a partire da questa angusta isoletta. Ma fino a pochi anni fa era così:
La fotografia sopra risale a prima del 1976, è forse meno attraente delle prime due ma ci fa assaporare meglio il reale significato di questa isoletta per la storia degli USA e di New York. Nell’immagine infatti dietro Ellis Island si vedono ancora i cantieri e i moli collegati alla stazione ferroviaria centrale. La fotografia è stata scattata prima dello sviluppo del Liberty State Park (sull’ex complesso ferroviario), inaugurato nel 1976. Moli e stazione ferroviaria che collegavano questo isolotto all’entroterra dell’immenso e spopolato territorio statunitense.
Noi ovviamente parliamo di turismo ma anche nel limitarci a ciò non si può non collegare New York a quelle masse umane che qua giungevano in cerca di un nuovo inizio. Ellis Islòand tras il 1892 e il 1954 ha costituito l’ideale porta d’orata a questo nuovo mondo ricco di speranza per il futuro. Si calcola che tra il 1892 e il 1924 furono circa 12 milioni i immigrati che arrivarono negli Stati Uniti attraverso New York Uniti, proprio transitando per Ellis Island sotto la lunga ombra della statua della Libertà. Solo dall’Italia, in America ogni anno arrivarono decine di migliaia di contadini: tra il 1876 e il 1988 furono quasi ventisette milioni gli emigrati italiani verso il nuovo continente (http://www.galatamuseodelmare.it/la-stazione-di-ellis-island/ )
L’immigrazione in USA non passava solo per Ellis Island ovviamente, la costa pacifica era più facilmente percorribile dall’Asia così come dal Messico si passava attarverso il proprio confine (ne parleremo altrove), ma di certo Ellis Island era senza ombra di dubbio il canale d’accesso principale al sogno americano. Certi sogni rimangono tali, altri ci allietano e certi diventano incubi. Attraverso quella porta d’oro sono passate queste masse di esseri umani su cui si è costruito (idealmente e materialmente) uno dei centri nevralgici (se non “il” centro nevralgico) dello sviluppo culturale, politico, economico dell’intero pianeta Terra. Principalmente si trattava di giovani contadini semi analfabeti, pochi gli artigiani, che venivano poi reclutati in umili lavori ma di cui la nscente potenza americana necesitava tra l’ottocento e i primi decenni del novecento.
Parlarne qua è appropriato anche in una discussione prettamente turistica per ils emplice fatto che Ellis Island oggi è stata tarsformata in un museo, il museo dell’immigrazione. Non è il solo punto di approdo dei migranti a New York. Prima della sua apertura infatti altri 8 milioni di emnigranti transitarono per il Castle Garden Immigration Depot di Manhattan (vedere: http://www.castlegarden.org/ ). Ad ogni modo è un monumento nel verso senso etimologico della parola a quelle forme di dispersione umane che sono la caratteristica im prescindibile del genere umano a prescindere dalle motivazioni: le migrazioni.
Facciamo anche una premessa geografica, mi sembra doverosa per quanto opportuna. Ellis Island la tratto qua parlando di New York perché è un isolotto un pò particolare. Da un punto di vista amministrativo Ellis Island ha avuto una storia un pò ballerina, saltando da un’amministrazione all’altra un pò come le persone che accoglieva o respingecva a seconda dei casi. Sebbene lo status di questo isolotto sia un pò particolare e diviso tra New York city e il New Jersey, attualmente però l’edificio che ospita l’Ellis Island Immigration Museum si trova nel territorio appartenente a New York e specificatamente proprio a Manhattan.
I dati di questo porto di ingresso sono stati messi in rete da una fondazione con l’obiettivo di renderli reperibili a chiunque volesse cercare qualche parente lontano che si passato di qua. La ricerca potrebbe sorprendervi. Certo la vita dell’emigrante none ra facile. Non era facile nemmeno lo sbarco nel suolo statunitense. E non era scontato. Un trattamento particolare era riservato ai soli passeggeri che a bordo dei grandi transatlantici erano chiamati “passeggeri di stiva”, ovvero i viaggiatori di terza classe. Senza farne un facile ed inutile moralismo è pur vero che questi passeggeri di terza classe non scendevano dalla nave e se ne andavano a prendere un gelato. Questi venivano imbarcati per Ellis Island e qua controllati accuratamente. Venivano sottoposti a vari controlli, certi controlli sono comprensibili soprattutto per le possibili malattie che potevano entrare nel Paese, altri controlli sono meno comprensibili almeno da un’ottica attuale. Da un lato esami medici e colloqui di carattere generale, dall’altro test psicologici e di intelligenza (!! quale intelligenza?).
Come si diceva si trattava in genere di emigranti poveri, partiti in cerca di danaro e fortuna. Forse altri in cerca di qualcosa che nessuno riesce mai a delucidarsi bene. Molto spesso partire era l’unica risorsa che resta loro, non sanno né leggere né scrivere, non hanno la prospettiva di un lavoro sicuro, a volte sono malati, tanti sono minorenni o bambini. Molti di loro non hanno mai visto nient’altro se non il paese dove sono nati e ignorano che potrebbero finire assoldati dalla malavita locale (come succederà per molti di loro).
Italiani, russi, polacchi, tedeschi, irlandesi, inglesi, asiatici. Per la maggior parte sono contadini, manovali, minatori e operai.

O puzzano come l’accusa che veniva loro rivolta da una grossa parte dell’opinione pubblica. A volte non inutilmente (senza motivo) preoccupata della ricaduta sulla malavita locale che queste nuove masse di cui molti disperati potevano portare. (se è pur vero che il cinema è una delle forme d’arte del mondo contemporaneo, guardarsi c’era una volta in america ambientato proprio a New York e proprio a Manhattan non sarà solo un gesto di passatempo)
Visto che il sito geografiaturistica.it denota la chiara matrice di provenienza linguistica e il pubblico di riferimento, al solo fine di farvi evdere quanto avria il punto di vista voglio riportarvi qa alcuni spezzoni di giornali statunitensi che parlano degli italiani tra la fine dell’800 e i primi decenni del ‘900. Sia chiaro non c’è nessuna intenzione moralizzante o moralizzatrice, tanto meno riferito agli italiani nello specifio, si potrebbe fare altrettanto e anzi sarebbe anche più evidente con i migranti “zoticoni tedeschi”. Questo lo possiamo fare per ogni gruppo umano e per ogni luogo del pianeta Terra, qua però, visto che sulla carta di identità e più che altro sulla terra su cui mettiamo i piedi siamo in Italia, lo evidenzio per gli italiani.Li riporto questi stralci senza commento, nè parlando di aspetti evri o falsi, giustificati o ingiustificati. Se io esco da New York e vado in Alabama emerge una cosa per noi difficilmente giustificabile oggi, gli italiani (nord, centro, sud, isolani) nei tribunali dell’Alabama non erano ritenuti di razza bianca. In un paese come l’Alabama in cui al discriminazione raziale era alta, non era un particolare da poco.
